Physical Education (PE)
PE is taught in mixed ability groups following the National Curriculum at Key Stages 2 and 3. All pupils receive 4 hours of PE every two weeks delivered by PE specialists. All pupils are encouraged to improve their health and fitness, responsibility towards others, awareness of personal safety and the safety of others, to enjoy school sport at their own level and ultimately make progress and improve performance.
Intent
We aim to offer a broad, balanced, ambitious and progressive programme of study to enable all pupils to develop physically, socially, cognitively and emotionally.
Through the curriculum and extra-curricular provision the key concepts of accurate replication, developing physical and mental capacity, development of skills / performance, outwitting opponents, problem solving, making informed choices about healthy lifestyle, and evaluating and improving underpin all learning. We offer opportunities for pupils to shine regardless of ability or experience.
The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
-
Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
-
Engage in competitive sports and activities.
-
Lead healthy, active lives.
The PE curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils develop competence to participate. This is achieved through three connected pillars of progression:
-
Motor competence – knowledge of the range of movements that become increasingly sport and physical activity specific.
-
Rules, strategies and tactics – knowledge of the conventions of participation in different sports and physical activities.
-
Healthy participation – knowledge of safe and effective participation.
These pillars of progression have informed the key concepts and processes taught at BHA.
KEY STAGE 2
- To enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other using a range of fundamental skills.
- To continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and series of movements.
- To develop an understanding of how to improve in different activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise success.
KEY STAGE 3
- To move all pupils between the continuum of competent – confident – expert in a variety of activities.
- To develop technique and improve performance.
- Use tactics and strategies to overcome opponents.
- Understand the long term health benefits of PE and sport.
- Understand what makes a performance effective.
- To take on different roles such as coach, official, scorer, analyser, organiser.
Implementation
The Curriculum
The curriculum consists of a variety of activities that enable all pupils to demonstrate and apply their core knowledge. The key knowledge concepts are embedded in the teaching of each activity.

PE Programme of Study - Girls
PE Programme of Study - Boys
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
The extra-curricular programme is extensive and aims to offer something for everyone. Clubs and teams are run at lunchtime and we have regular fixtures. Our sports teams and individuals enjoy success at local, regional and national levels. As part of the SWSSA, we regularly participate in School Games inclusion events such as NAK and Boccia.
The successful House System continues to flourish across a range of sporting activities such as inter-house football, netball, tri pair’s rugby, softball and rounders. This enables more pupils to experience competition and helps raise the standard of our school teams.
In Year 8, pupils undertake a Sports Leaders course as part of the KS3 enrichment programme. This very popular qualification teaches all Year 8 pupils the importance of organisation, communication, teamwork and respect delivered through the medium of sport.
