Geography

Intent
 

Geography is a wide and varied subject that has something that will appeal to every student. Every child in our school should have the chance to learn about the world around them and be able to consider their current and future role in it. The geography curriculum at BHA follows the content set out in the national curriculum – places, human and physical geography and the development of geographical skills. Students will develop a deeper understanding of places both on a local and global scale and appreciate the need to live in balance with a fragile environment. They will also learn and develop a wide range of skills including numeracy, literacy, and fieldwork. The fieldwork allows for students to analyse data they collect and present findings using a range of mathematical skills. Opportunities to write at length are included in the curriculum for each year group.

 

Implementation 

Year 6 – Topics:

The UK and map skills. This unit allows students to learn basic geography using maps of the world, Europe and the British Isles. This reinforces their sense of place. This is followed by an introduction to map reading using Ordnance Survey maps.

The Local and Global Environment. This unit allows students to examine the world at different scales, looking at the local area and examining the impact of global environmental issues on it as well as what people do to influence changes in the environment.

Water and Rivers. Here the students learn about how rivers work using the River Nile as an example. This is followed by examining how water is used and where it comes from. Students discover what a precious resource water is.

Year 7 – Topics:

Settlements and Shopping. This unit allows students to study the local area and the places found in it. Some key questions include: What are settlements and why do they grow? How is the site for a settlement chosen? Students will study the places they live in and compare it to Pershore. A fieldtrip to Pershore to collect data will be included in this unit.


Coasts. A unit of physical geography that shows students how to identify coastal features and how they were formed. Do coastlines change and can this affect people? They will create a detailed tourist brochure about a section of the Dorset coastline.


Weather and Extreme Weather. Students will examine how the weather that we all moan about occurs and how we measure and observe it. They will find out how amazing and dangerous the weather can be by looking at extreme weather events around the world.

Industry, Farming and the Environment. This unit explores different types of industries and the variety of jobs that people do and how this can affect the environment. Students will find out about farming in the UK and play a decision making game where they are put in charge of their own farm.‚Äč

Year 8 – Topics:

World map skills and knowledge. Students learn and reinforce where oceans, continents and countries are.

Ecosystems. In this unit students will find out more about the variety of natural landscapes found in our world. They will find out what an ecosystem is and how people can affect them. Finally, students will carry out their own independent research study on a global biome.

Earthquakes and Volcanoes. Which of these are the most destructive? Here students will find out about the phenomenal natural forces that have shaped our planet and how they cause earthquakes and volcanoes. They will learn about the changes that our planet has undergone and how natural disasters affect people around the world.

China: What is China like and how has it changed? Students are able to find out about the people and places in this fascinating country.

Glaciation: In this unit students discover how ice has changed Earth’s landscape and learn to recognize some common features made by ice.

 

Assessment in geography:

Teacher assessment will take place throughout the course and regular assessment tasks will be set and marked.

Geography contributes to the learning by:

  • Providing opportunities for all pupils to learn and achieve with a focus on developing pupils’ core geographical knowledge.
  • Promoting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development and prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.
  • Providing pupils with the opportunity to explore local, national and international issues, often by contributing to our Erasmus projects.
  • Providing literacy and numeracy opportunities.
  • Enabling pupils to recognise their role in contributing to improving local and global environments.

 

Key performance indicators for pupils at the end of Year 8 that have reached age related expectations are:

Skills.

Pupils can:

  • Use maps and atlases to locate countries and to help them create maps of their own.
  • Interpret Ordnance Survey maps (using grid references, symbols and scale).
  • Use 8 compass point directions.
  • Use, interpret and present geographical data.
  • Use fieldwork to gather data, analyse information and make conclusions
  • Describe and explain geographical features and processes using increasingly complex information sources.
  • Make links between different places.

 

Places.

Pupils have:

  • Extended their special awareness of a range of countries across Western Europe and the world including the UK, China, Turkey, California and Nepal.
  • Enhanced their awareness of the geography of the UK and of their local area.
  • An awareness of the variety of biomes

Human and Physical Geography.

Pupils can:

  • Recognise how people are influenced by the environment that can affect settlement location, use of rivers, and availability of resources, and how people themselves can impact the environment.
  • Identify how the populations of places can change.
  • Identify the types of industries people are engaged in.
  • Recognise causes and effects of a range of natural processes including weather, weathering, erosion, glaciation and tectonic activity.
  • Realise the effects of climate change on places and recognise our role in it.
